  1. 1894

    The first chapter

    The bakery school opens at the Borough Polytechnic Institute, beginning a lasting connection between baking education and London.

  2. 1898
    1899

    A school takes shape

    A purpose-built bakery opens in 1898. Links with the national baking association lead to the National School of Bakery and Confectionary in 1899.

  3. 1922

    A royal commission

    The school produces the wedding cake presented to Princess Mary by the National Association of Master Bakers and Confectioners.

  4. 1930

    A new home for learning

    The Duke of York opens new school buildings on 20 February, expanding the spaces available for bakery training.

  5. 1948

    Baking for national occasions

    The school helps create a silver wedding anniversary cake for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and a christening cake for Prince Charles.

  6. 1992

    Baking becomes a degree

    A BSc (Hons) in Baking Technology and Process Management launches, the first UK course of its kind.

  7. 1994

    A century of learning

    The National Bakery School marks its centenary, celebrating 100 years of baking education.

  8. 2019

    125 years of baking education

    The school celebrates its anniversary at Bakers’ Hall with the Worshipful Company of Bakers and members of the industry.

  9. 2024

    From classroom to shop

    The NBS shop opens in January, giving students experience in production planning, packaging and the business of baking.
